Lady Jaguars Take Two on Opening Day, Beat USC Sumter 8-2 and 7-0

Payten Redman Has Stellar Day going 8-8

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Lady Jaguars have started their season in the right direction winning both games on opening day 8-2 and 7-0 against USC Sumter. 

Game One 

The Lady Jaguars nabbed the lead late in the game in a 8-2 win over USC Sumter.  The game was tied at two with the Lady Jaguars batting in the bottom of the fifth frame when an error scored one for the Jaguars and opened up the flood gates.  USC Sumter scored first in the contest, but ultimately it was the Jaguars who ended up heating up their bats to prevail.  

Getting the game going was Malia Gunn who hit in two to tie the game when she scooted around the bases with a triple. The Jaguars tallied three runs in the sixth inning to put away the score with RBI productions from Payten Redman and Tonya Faulkner. 

The Game ended on a stellar double play as USC Sumter hit a bullet to first basemen Kelly Smith, who then deflected the ball down and second baseman Tonya Faulkner came in the vicinity diving to catch the ball and then make the throw back to first in order to double up the runner to end the Fire Ants threat. The Jaguars turned 3 double plays in the game. 

Hailey Hunter took the win in the circle, she went 5 innings, allowed 8 hits, gave up 2 runs and struck out 5.  Leading the Jaguar offense was Payten Redman who was hot at the plate going 4-4, scoring 2 runs and knocking in 1 RBI.  Hailey Hunter also was a star at the plate as she went 2-4, scoring 1 run and tallying 1 RBI of her own.  Other Jaguars to produce with one hit in the contest were; Malia Gunn, Hailee Gifford, Kelly Smith, and Tonya Faulkner.  The Jaguars tallied 10 hits in the contest. 

Game Two 

The Jaguars continued to hit the softball well in the second game as they put up 3 runs immediately on the Fire Ants in the first frame.  Providing stellar defense, the Jaguars were able to hold the Fire Ants Scoreless and added to their tally in the third frame with one, and finally putting up 3 more runs in the top of the 7th to win the Game 7-0.  

Kerrigan Shafer started and finished the game for the Lady Jaguars, going 7 innings, Striking out 3, Walking 2 and only giving up 4 hits to the Fire Ants.  Payten Redman was once again hot in the batters box as she tallied another 4-4 performance and scoring 3 runs.  Kami Latimore did the catching in game two and came in clutch at the dish going 2-4 and driving in 2 RBI's.  

Other Jaguars contributing to the offense were Malia Gunn, Hailee Gifford, Shayla Mills, and Paige Schiffman.  

The Jaguars will return to action in the morning when they take on Frederick Community College and Grand Rapids Community College. All Games can be seen online and found through our schedule link.
