Men's Basketball Beats #8 South Suburban in Overtime

DANVILLE, IL - There's always one game in particular that Danville fans are most excited for during the basketball season, and it's against the South Suburban Bulldogs. It happens just once during the regular season, and it was the Jaguar's turn this year to host this past Saturday, December 14th.

Danville (4-6) was looking to grab another victory as they've lost the last couple games on the road, and South Suburban (9-2) was sitting in the 8th spot in the latest NJCAA Division II polls as of last week. Both teams started off the game quick and were scoring baskets back and forth in the first half. The Bulldogs were able to pull ahead after a few possessions, but the Jaguars continued to attack and knock down shots, giving them a two-point lead going into halftime (40-38).

It was 77-75 Bulldogs with a minute and a half remaining in the second half when Blake Reed drove in the lane for a layup and was fouled, sending him to the line to shoot two. He missed the first, but got the second, making it 77-76, South Suburban with the lead. The Bulldogs got a layup on their end, putting them up by three (79-76), before Devan Larkin hit a 3-pointer in the left corner with 43 seconds remaining, tying the game at 79. A last second shot effort fell short by Danville, sending the game into overtime. Jackson Twombly scored the first basket in overtime, and hit one of two free throws, making it 82-79 Danville, with a little over three minutes to go. Twombly got the and-one and the extra point shortly after Danville forced a turnover on the Bulldogs. Reed knocked down another layup with 11 seconds to go, and South Suburban got the ball back with 10 seconds down at their basket, and the defensive pressure put on by Jaguars, allowed Jeremiah Poniewaz to get the steal off of the inbound and get the layup, making the final score 89-86 Danville.

It was a big win for the team as the Bulldogs were in the top 10 ranking last week, and only had one other loss entering the game last Saturday. Blake Reed was the leading scorer for the game with 29 points, while Jackson Twombly scored 16, and Dredon Nunn scored 10. Danville shot 50% from the 3-point line, 60.4% from field-goal range, and 64.1% from the free-throw line.

Next up for the Jaguars is a road trip to Olive Harvey College in Chicago tomorrow evening, with the game starting at 7:30 pm.
