Lady Jaguar Basketball Starts Season off with Win

Beats Lady Cougars 78-67

DANVILLE, IL - The 2024-25 basketball season is off to a solid start for the Lady Jaguars as they got their first win of the regular season over the Kalamazoo Community College Cougars (0-1).

Danville (1-0) has a lot of new faces this season as they graduated some starters and active players from last season. This year's roster includes some transfer students, as well as six freshmen, and four returners from last year's group. Head Coach Kyle Bent has been eager to get this year going as last season was his first one back at Danville Area Community College in 10 years. The returning sophomores having the knowledge and experience from already playing a year of college ball, to the transfer students being in a similar boat, and the incoming freshman talent, basketball season couldn't have come any quicker.

It was a slower start to the game on Saturday afternoon as the Cougars got out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter. The Jaguars began to find their groove and rhythm though after knocking down some baskets and getting some defensive stops. The Jaguars ended the first quarter with an 18-14 lead.

Danville improved their field goal percentage from the first quarter to the second, from 43.8% to 50%. The Jaguars also out-rebounded the Cougars, 9-5 in the second quarter, making the halftime score 36-32. Danville had a big third quarter after scoring 23 points in those ten minutes alone, with the help of Keiara Gregory's 9 points and Tangee Gagau's 10 points. Despite some push back from Kalamazoo late in the fourth, it was Danville who came out on top in the end, securing the 78-67 victory.

Gagua led the Jaguars with 21 points while Gregory had 20. Freshman Ayanna Smith had 12 points, going 4-5 from the 3-point line. Jillisa Briggs just barely missed having a double double, earning 11 points and grabbing 9 rebounds.

The team's next contest is on Wednesday, November 6th when they host the Cavaliers of Kankakee Community College starting at 5:30 in the Mary Miller Gymnasium.
